Nafsul Mutmainnah

"(It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction (Nafsul Mutmainnah) ! Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, and enter you My Paradise!" - Surah Al Fajr [89:27-30]

'Heedlessness.'

-Something dangerous that I've noticed amongst the Ummah lately is the act heedlessness of Allah and His messenger (sallallahu `alayhi was salaam).

The reason why I say this is because I've noticed some people not fearing Allah in the correct manner that He deserves. For example, the disgusting act of Zina (illegal intercourse) Allah has warned us to not even go near it, but many have actually committed this act. Wa Allahu Musta'aan! Are not the words of Allah sufficient when He ta’ala says “And come not near to unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a faahishah (a great sin) and an evil way.”- Surah Al-Israa.

The words of Allah are and should be enough, but like I’ve mentioned many have become heedless and have taken their lower desires as their Lord! Yes I said as their Lord because Allah Ta’ala says “Have you seen him who has taken as his god his own desire?”- Surah Al Furqan.

Subhana’Allaah! You see how heedlessness can lead to something like shirk? May Allah protect us from this, Ameen. One of the Salaf when admonishing said ‘O my brotherVerily, the offspring of sin is heedlessness. And verily, this heedlessness brings about the hardness of the heart. And verily, this hardness of the heart makes a person distant from Allah and verily being distant from Allah brings about the fire.’ Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala also says in the Quran "Do you then wonder at this recital (the Qur'an)? And you laugh at it and weep not, Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing, etc.).”- Surah An Najm. This verse actually sums up a lot of things. For instance, the wasting of our time, this too have many become heedless of.

Does one think that time is just here without a purpose? Does one ever stop and say ‘Subhana’Allah, what am I doing with my time? Am I being productive with it? Or do I waste it on insignificant things?’ The Prophet Muhammad (salalahu elyahis salam) said in a hadith “There are two bounties of Allah wherein most people are deceived, health and free time.”
This is so true many have become heedless of their free time and health." In terms of health, so many are healthy and strong walhamdulillah, but don’t use their health in a beneficial way. For example, we all know that salat is the most important thing after belief in Allah alone and His messenger (salalahu elayhis salam) and will be the first thing Allah questions one for on the Day of Judgment.

But how many healthy, strong, sane individuals guard their salat? Does one know the importance of guarding the salat? Allah says “Guard strictly (five obligatory) As-Salawat (the prayers) especially the middle Salat (i.e. the best prayer - 'Asr). And stand before Allah with obedience”- Surah Al Baqara. He ta’ala also mentions in other verses about those who don’t guard their salat “So woe unto those performers of Salat (prayers) (hypocrites), Who delay their Salat (prayer) from their stated fixed times,”- Surah Al Ma'oon.

Subhana’Allah, we don’t want to be amongst those who are heedless of their salat! So may Allah protect us from that as well, ameen! Those heedless of their salat will on the day of resurrection try to prostrate down to Allah but will not be able to.  Allah says “(Remember) the Day when the Shin shall be laid bare (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) and they shall be called to prostrate (to Allah), but they (hypocrites) shall not be able to do so, Their eyes will be cast down, ignominy will cover them; they used to be called to prostrate (offer prayers), while they were healthy and good (in the life of the world, but they did not).”- Surah Al Qalam.

Ya akhwat, I’ve tried to use different examples to show how one can be heedless, but remember that all of those examples are things that are in ones best interest so when one becomes heedless of their deen and their obligations, they are only harming their selves. Allah says “And whoever earns sin, he earns it only against himself. And Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.”- Surah An Nisa. Allah also says “So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it.”-Surah Az Zalzalah.

The thing that I really would like to understand is why are many people heedless of Allah, but aren’t heedless of the things he’s given to one? For example if Allah were to take away ones home, clothes, food, senses, and all of that one would be quick to turn to Him and ask of Him. Allah says “And when harm touches man, he invokes Us, lying down on his side, or sitting or standing. But when We have removed his harm from him, he passes on his way as if he had never invoked Us for a harm that touched him!” Surah Yunus.

A lesson that we must take from this is to always no matter what be thankful to Ar-Rahman even when a calamity or a good thing befalls us, remember Allah in your good times and your hard times, and be not like those who forget the graces of Allah completely. Remember Allah says “O Man!, what has made you careless of your Lord The Most Generous?”- Surah Al Infitar.

Insha’Allah Ta’ala this note was of benefit to someone, and made someone realize the importance of not being amongst those who are heedless. I tried to use as many Quran verses as I could to show the importance of what I was saying.

Anything good I have said is from Allah and anything bad I have said is from myself and my Qari. I ask Allah to forgive you and I of our sins and to grant us a good ending and to admit us into paradise, Allahuma Ameen Ya Rabbil Alameen.

-'Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.'- Surah Al Ma'idah.
