‘The Reminder Benefits the Believers’

Rabi al-Akhar 10 1433

Live Lectures From Dammaaj
Shaykh Aboo Abdur-rahmaan Yahya ibn ‘alee al-Hajooree
‘The Reminder Benefits the Believers’

The shaykh hafidhahullaah starts off by saying in the name of Allaah, he than praises and thanks Allaah  and makes witness there is no deity but Allaah and Muhammad [sallallaahu’alayhee wa sallam] is His final messenger, and he sends peace upon him, his family, and companions. To proceed, the shaykh hafidhahullaah states the ayaah of Allaah azza wa jal, interpretation of the meaning “And remind for verily, the reminding profits the believers.” [1]

Allaah mentions to us that the believer benefits from the reminder and there is no doubt as Allaah said, interpretation of the meaning “Verily, those who are Al-Muttaqûn when an evil thought comes to them from Shaytân, they remember (Allâh), and (indeed) they then see (aright).”[2]And the best of those who remember and ponder are those who humble themselves to Allaah as Allaah said, interpretation of the meaning “He is successful who purifies himself, and remembers the name of his Lord.”[3] And Allaah also said, interpretation of the meaning, “Verily! In this is indeed an evident proof and a manifest sign for people who give thought.”[4]

Allaah tabarak wa ta’aala said “[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded."[5]

So those who have a mind and sense are those who ponder and reflect and Allaah said, interpretation of the meaning “those who ponder and reflect are none but those who turn to Allaah seeking his aid and mercy” Allaah also said in regards to those who are coming back to Allaah seeking His mercy and forgiveness, “It is He Who has sent down to you the Book. In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book [and those are the Verses of Al-Ahkam (commandments, etc.), Al-Fara'id (obligatory duties) and Al-Hudud (legal laws for the punishment of thieves, adulterers, etc.)]; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials, etc.), and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings save Allaah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding.”[6] Allaah also tells us “Thus do We explain the Ayaat in detail for the people who reflect.”[7]

So the shaykh Aboo ‘Abdir-Rahmaan ibn ‘Alee Yahya al-Hajooree hafidhahullaah said there are many ayaat which clarify to us about the individual who ponders over the ayaat of Allaah, who has a mind, he reflects and ponders over Allaah’s ayaat and so that individual who looks back and ponders will surely benefit, and the shaykh said this is what we would like to remind ourselves with; the Quran and Sunah of the prophet [sallallaahu’alayhee wa sallam] taking it and holding on to it and beseeching in Allaah that we become firm in it and the prophet [sallallaahu’alayhee wa sallam] said "And you will live to see great difference, so cling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me, even if it be with your teeth”[8]

Also the shaykh hafidhahullaah says the individual who would like to seek this from Allaah, this position, this status of being firm upon the Quran and Sunnah using them and seeking from them and getting this success and being of those who firmly uphold it, this is what the individual should be like; of those who seek it as Allaah said  interpretation of the meaning, “Verily this Quran guides to that which is most upright”[9] and ”It is He Who sends down manifest Ayaat to His slave that He may bring you out from darkness into light. And verily, Allaah is to you full of kindness, Most Merciful.”[10]

The ayaat of Allaah increases these individual’s in faith. So shaykh yahya reminds himself and us that it is upon you to hold to unto the Quran and Sunnah especially in these times and days since there are many trials and tribulations and darkness everywhere.

So the individual should return to the Quran and Sunnah since there is no doubt that this darkness and trials and tribulations the people live in are due to them leaving off the Quran and Sunnah as Allaah said,” Let those who oppose his command beware lest a trial might strike them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.”[11] Allaah also said, interpretation of the meaning, “Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer verily, to him We will give a good life.”[12] So the individual should not turn away from the religion of Allaah, His Quran and Sunnah and if the individual is afflicted by harm, trials and tribulations it is because he has turned away from Allaah, as Allaah said “But whosoever turns away from My Reminder verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." He will say: "O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)." (Allaah) will say: "Like this, Our Ayaat came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected."[13]

So the individual should cling onto the Sunnah of the prophet [sallallaahu’alayhee wa sallam] and his rightly guided khulafa. As Allaah said, interpretation of the meaning, “and he who is fearful and concious of Allaah than Allaah will grant him means of success (ayaah surah at talaq)[14] So, the shaykh hafidhahullaah mentions and says this is what he wanted to remind us and himself with, he asks that Allaah makes us of those who benefit greatly.

The shaykh was also asked a question regarding: What is your advice, O shaykh for the people of ahlul sunnah generally and the people of Syria especially from that which we see today? What is the stance in this matter?

The shaykh hafidhahullaah said our advise is for them and for whoever hears this is to go back to the Quran and Sunnah and mentioning to us the hadeeth which states that for every time there is a time in which an individual falls back and becomes lazy and for every individual the time in which he is not coming back to Allaah not turning to Allaah, as he should in every time, so whoever turns back to Allaah has truly succeeded and what this hadeeth means is that this individual should not allow there to be a time where shaytaan overwhelms him but rather he should also be with Allaah and His messenger [sallallaahu’alayhee wa sallam] with the Quran and Sunnah.

So the shaykh said whatever the enemies tried to prepare for the Muslim shouldn’t faze him as long as he holds onto the Quran and Sunnah. He also mentions the hadeeth verily those who became before you and were destroyed before you were destroyed because they denied the messengers and they used to question a lot.

So the shaykh said this in which we see occurring in the Muslim world requires from us sincere repentance as Allaah said “O you who believe repent and return back to Allaah all of you,” So he mentions as a whole what is going on in the ummah is because of the sins of mankind as Allaah tells us “Evil has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned.“

The shaykh tells us that the individual should uphold and implement this Quran and Sunnah in themselves, so our advise is this, as for the specific matter the Syrian matter, than we mention the case of this upholding and holding unto the Quran and Sunnah and to be patient as Allaah says “o you who believe seek in patience in salaah and it is only of grate value who humble themselves to their lord

We ask Allaah to grant us and you success in this life and hereafter and make us those who are firm upon the Quran and Sunnah along with the understanding of the salaf as salih of this ummah.

The Difference between Men and Women in Islam

Character and Creation:
Man was created from dirt and the woman was created from the rib.
Allah has decreed the menstrual cycle for the woman and not the man.
Men grow beards women don’t, but if she does it’s permissible for her to shave it.
Women are deficient in their intellect and religion. i.e A woman witness = ½ a man and during menses she doesn’t pray and fast.
The men have been given strength over women.
A man’s semen is white and a woman’s is yellow.
It’s an obligation to circumcise the man and its sunnah to circumcise the woman.
Ear piercing is permissible for women and not for men.

Purification:
The urine of the woman is stronger and more dirtier than the man’s
It’s legislated for man to redo Wudu if he intends to have relations with his a second time in the same setting.

Prayer:
The Athaan and Iqamah aren’t a must for the women and it’s incorrect for a woman to call them for men.
A woman prays behind a man, even if she’s alone. However if a man prays behind another man alone, his prayer is incorrect.
A woman can’t lead a man in prayer.
If a woman leads the prayer for other women she must stand in the
middle. When a man leads the prayer he stands in front row all alone.
Congregational prayer is must for the men and not the women.
The best row for women in congregation is the last and the best row for the men is the first.
Walking to prayer at night is recommended for men, but not for woman.
If the imam makes a mistake in prayer the women clap and the men
say “ Subhanallah”
The women don’t have to attend Jumu’ah; and men must attend Jumu’ah.
Women can’t deliver the sermon for Eid, Jumu’ah, Eclipse prayer and Rain prayer.
Prayer is invalid when a woman passes in front of a man. And if a man passes in front of another man during prayer, it’s still valid.
The Eid prayer is an obligation for men, but not for women. However it’s recommended for women to attend if they are safe from fitah.

Funeral Prayer:
The congregation stands at the head of the deceased man and at the middle of the deceased woman.
It’s disliked for women to visit the graveyard and it’s recommended for men.
Women can’t accompany a funeral procession, but men can.
Women wash and shroud each other and men wash and shroud each other; unless they were spouses.

Zakah and Sadaqah:
Women are encouraged more than men to give charity.
A woman can pay Zakah on her children’s and husband’s behalf, but a man can’t pay Zakah on his children’s and wife’s behalf.
Redemption is a duty for the man and not the woman. This can occur if a man intentionally had relations with his wife during daylight in Ramadan.
A woman can’t fast voluntarily unless she has her husband’s permission. A man doesn’t need his wife’s permission to fast voluntarily.

Hajj
A woman must have a Mahram when travelling.
A woman mustn’t raise her voice during the Talbeeyah; and  a man should raise voice.
A woman’s Ihram is the clothes she wears for the journey.
A man can do Ramal-a slight jog between Safa and Marwa, and around the Ka’bah; and a woman shouldn’t.
It’s not recommended for the women to try and kiss or touch the black stone during crowding.
A man can ascend on Safa and Marwa, however a woman mustn’t.

Aqeeqah:
For a girl one sheep is sacrificed and for a boy two.

Jihad, Battle and Leadership:
There were no women Prophets or Messengers.
A woman can’t be a leader for the people or the military.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge from the men through a handshake and from the women by speech.
Women aren’t obliged to perform Jihad unlike the men. However there are certain conditions that must adhered to before the men embark on this  obligation.

Marriage , Divorce, Iddah, Kulla’:
Women are given the Sadaq, not the men.
Men have the authority for divorce, marriage and giving the Mahr, not the women.
A man can marry a woman from Ahul Kitab if he knows she frees from Zina.  A woman doesn’t have this right.
A man can have more than one wife. A woman can’t have more than one husband.
The Waleemah and wedding are the responsibility on the man not the woman.
It’s permissible for the women to beat the Duff at their wedding. This act isn’t permissible for the men.
Maintenance and support are the duty of the men not the women.
A woman is under the authority of her husband. A man isn’t under the authority of his wife.
A woman can’t have anyone visit her home unless she gets her
husband’s permission first. A Man doesn’t need permission for visitors in his home.
The Angels curse the woman if her husband separates from her bed. The husband doesn’t receive this curse.
A woman must have her husband’s permission before she leaves home. A man doesn’t need his wife’s permission to leave home.
A man doesn’t have an ‘Idda unless he wants to marry his ex-wife’s sister or aunt. However if he divorces his fourth wife and wants to remarry, then he must wait until his ex-wife concludes her ‘Iddah.

Dress and Adornment:
It’s recommended for a woman to adorn herself in her home for her husband.
It’s haraam for a woman to imitate a man in his dress.
It’s an obligation for the women to sag their clothes below her ankles. Sagging pants and thoubs below the ankles is Haraam for men.
A woman can’t change her clothes unless she’s in her own home. This act doesn’t apply to the men.
A woman must wear Hijab: cover her face and body.
Women can wear jewelry.
Men can’t wear silk, but women can.

Shaykh Yahya al-Haajooee, regarding his father and his seeking of knowledge

My father raised me and my brothers well, away from Qaat, smoking, Shamah and other calamities. Nothing would upset him more than seeing us being negligent in the prayer of congregation or our supererogatory prayers. The most beloved thing to him was that one of us would become a scholar. He sent us to study in Katateeb, he put me to study under the Mi'laamah of the Ameen of the village, it's Khateeb and Faqeeh; Yahya al 'Aatibee, may Allaah have mercy upon him. Studying in a Mi'laamah was in accordance to the methodology of those of old.

Upon graduating from the Mi'laamah with knowledge of the Qur-aan and reading it, my father decided to take me to the city of az Zaydeeyyah since it was said at the time that it was the city of knowledge and Fatwaa. My father, may Allaah preserve him, loves knowledge and religion, he used pray the night prayers and fast a lot, I do not know that he ever earned one Dirham from impermissible means, but he did not know about Sufeeyyah, Shee'ah or other misguided sects, he used to respect them and they would visit him a lot. Allaah saved me from studying under the Sufeeyyah through my mother, may Allaah preserve her and grant her a good end. She would cry so that I do not go and stay in another city by myself without a partner from my town at a young age, so my father let me remain and herd sheep.

I then traveled to Saudi Arabia where I attended the circle of Qur-aan of the noble Shaykh 'Ubaydullaah al Afghaanee, may Allaah preserve him, after Fajr in the city of Abha. I also studied some of Saheeh Muslim from him, he used to start with it before listening to us. He traveled and I studied under Shaykh Muhammad A'dham who used to teach Qur-aan in Masjid Yahya, I read until Surat al 'Araaf to them both, then the Shaykh traveled and I completed the Qur-aan with the Riwaayah of Hafs 'an 'Aasim with Muhammad Basheer and to Allaah belongs al praise.

Even though I loved knowledge at that time, I did not find anybody to direct me to study with ash Shaykh al Imaam ibn Baaz, or others from the scholars of Saudi who were teaching, may Allaah have mercy upon them. I then heard of the Shaykh al 'Allaamah Muqbil ibn Haadee al Waadi'ee, may Allaah have mercy over him, that he was a Salafee scholar teaching the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger - صلى الله عليه وسلم - in Damaaj, may Allaah protect it and grant its people success in attaining all that is good. I met him in his blessed house in the year 1405 H, my father came with me and told the Shaykh to look after me and left, and he continued to aid me in seeking knowledge with monetary aid every now and then.

Ever since that time I remained seeking knowledge, I do not like traveling a lot and wasting time, so Allaah, with His mercy, facilitated a lot of good and benefit in a number of sciences at the hands of our Shaykh, al 'Alaamah al Muhaddith al Salafee al Maymoon Muqbil ibn Haadee al Waadi'ee, may Allaah have mercy upon him.

Likewise is the state in this blessed place (Damaaj), I used to teach Arabic Grammar, 'Aqeedah and Fiqh in addition to what we all were studying under our Shaykh, Shaykh al Mashaayikh of the Salafee Da'wah in Yemen, Muqbil ibn Haadee al Waadi'ee, may Allaah have mercy upon him. After that, our Shaykh Muqbil, may Allaah make his home Firdaus, used to order me to take his place in teaching if he was sick or traveled, and when his time came close, he advised that I take his place after him.

The enemies of this place used to harbor evil suspicions, that after the Shaykh passed away, may Allaah have mercy upon him, the Da'wah would be removed and the building would be turned into warehouses for Qaat, as we and others used to hear them say during the illness of the Shaykh and prior to that. When Allaah turned the hearts of His servants to this goodness after the Shaykh's death, the Da'wah expanded even more, and the numbers of students have increased by folds since the time of its founder, our Shaykh al Imaam al Waadi'ee may Allaah have mercy upon him. This angered some of those who were afflicted with the disease of jealousy in their hearts, from amongst the students of the Shaykh, may Allaah have mercy upon him, or other than them from amongst those who have other worldly motives or partisanship, Allaah repelled their evil and left fallow their plots.

The superiority of knowledge

Excerpts taken from The Aaalim Sheikh Yahya Ibn Alee Al-Hajooree’s checking of The Introduction to  Sunan Ad-Daarimee:
The Chapter Superiority of Knowledge and the Scholar
334-Yuusuf Ibn Muusa informed us that Ibraaheem bin Muusa narrated to us that Muhammad bin AlHassan As-San’aanee narrated to us Mundhir and he is ibn An-Nu’maan on the authority of Wahb Ibn Munabih, that he said :
(The sittings in which knowledge is discussed are more beloved to me than its similar in prayer, that maybe one hears a word and benefits from it for a year or the rest of his life)
335-Ya’quub bin Ibraaheem informed us that Wakee’ informed us that Sufyaan Said:
(I dont know any action more superior than seeking knowledge and memorising, for the one that Allah wants good for)

336-And he said (wakee’) that Al-Hassan bin Saalih said:
(Verliy the people are in need of this Knowledge in regards to their Deen like they are in need of food and drink in the Dunyaa)
All of the above narrations have been graded saheeh by our Shaykh Yahya al Hajooree Hafidhahullaah in ‘Urful Wardee 156-157

The Pens that Record

Shaykh Yahya ibn Ali Al-Hajooree (May Allah protect and preserve him) mentioned in his explanation for Imam An-Nawaawee’s forty hadeeth that Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said there are numerous recording pens. Some of them are as follow

First: One pen’s evidence is found in the verse where Allah said

And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness against their own souls: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes! [ Al-Araf 172]

Second: The most exalted pen is found in the hadeeth of ‘Ebadah ibn Al-Saamat (may Allah be pleased with him). He narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said

The first thing Allah created was the pen. Then He ordered it to write. After that the pen said, “ Oh my Lord what do you want me to write?”. At that time Allah ordered the pen to write the decree for everything until the Day of Judgment
.[ Abu Dawud 4702 and At-Tirmithi 2308 ]
. This pen is general

Third: The pen which records if the fetus is happy or sad. This is found in the hadeeth reported by Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said

فَيُكْتَبُ رِزْقُهُ وَأَجَلُهُ وَعَمَلُهُ ثُمَّ يُكْتَبُ شَقِىٌّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ

“ …His share of provisions, lifespan , deeds and if he’s among the happy or unhappy is written…..[Muslim 6900]

Fourth: The pen that writes about the mature person. Allah’s messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said

“
The pen doesn’t record on three people; the person asleep until he wakes up, the child until he reaches puberty and the insane until he regains mental facilities.” [ Abu Dawud 4405, At-Tirmithi 1488, An-Nisa’3445, and Ibn Majah 2119]

Shaykh Yahya said this hadeeth refers to two pens. The one which records the bad deeds and the one which records the good deeds. [2004 Darul Hadeeth class after Thur for Jam’i Saheeh mima Laysa fee Saheehain.

Fifth: The pens that have been lifted. Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said

رُفِعَتِ الأَقْلاَمُ وَجَفَّتِ الصُّحُفُ

“…The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”[ At-Tirmithi 2706]

This benefit was taken from page 54 in Shaykh Yahya’s explanation for An-Nawaawee’s forty hadeeth. Printed Darul Kitab wa Sunnah 2007 first edition.

Shaykh Yahya al-Haajooee, hafidhahullaah.

Full Name: Yahya ibn ‘Alee ibn Ahmad ibn ‘Alee ibn Ya’qoob al Haajooree.
Kunya: Abu ‘Abdur Rahmaan.

Origin: Yemen, from the tribe of Banee Wahaan.

Born: Pre 1378 H | 1958 C.E.

Shaykh Muhammad A’dham.

Shaykh Rabee’ ibn Haadee al Madkhalee stated: “Shaykh Yahyaa al Hajooree is from amongst the most virtuous of people and is in a magnificent establishment.”

He also said: “Your brothers and Shaykh Yahyaa are noble scholars, they have virtues that by Allaah are not present in the Dunyaa at this time. They do not teach for certification or degrees, they do not teach for wealth, in the Emirates and Saudi, a teacher who may not even be qualified can earn 20 or 30,000 - they do not take any salaries, not from the government or otherwise. They study and teach for the pleasure of Allaah the Elevated, by Allaah this is a virtue for you, a virtue for your Da’wah, so have respect for it and be keen on having it remain strong, may Allaah bless you.”

Shaykh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez al Bura’ee stated: “Shaykh Yahyaa is handsomeness in the faces of Ahlus Sunnah, and a crown of their heads.”

The following is a Summary of the Shaykh’s own biography of himself.

The Da’wah continous to press forward in all goodness, and the favor is from Allaah, in the beginning and in the end, it is He who said {There is not a blessing that befalls you, except that it is from Allaah.} We ask Allaah to preserve for us our religion and our worldly life, and to repel Fitan, whether apparent or hidden, from us, our country and the rest of the lands of the Muslims and all praise is due to Allaah.
